Radiant Performance: Thursday, April 9, 2009 - 5 - 8 pm

Radiant is certainly influenced by seeing the "WACK, Art and the Feminist Revolution" exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Equally inspiring is the energy and enthusiasm that the Feminist Book Club has brought to ACAD. The “f” word is being reevaluated and revamped.

Radiant is collaborative performance with colourful fans and 100 women who wield influence in Calgary’s art community. The contributions of these artists, mentors, supporters, mothers, daughters, and sisters was celebrated at the opening reception and their participation in the project was commemorated throughout the exhibition. These amazing women were assembled at the opening reception creating a live social network. Each woman was be given a fan and asked to move the air around them. The fan served to acknowledge her presence and signify her impact on the art scene in Calgary and beyond.

Radiant will continue to exist through documentation. Photography is a powerful tool for recording and sometimes creating history. The project utilizes social networks, both real and virtual. More than 90 of the invited women attended and the gathering was be documented with a formal group photo. The Radiant Ladies were also invited to bring a camera and help capture the evening. Facebook’s technology, a network millions already use, is a site for participants and audience to create a public record of a very momentous meeting. More than 100 images are now included in this site.
